Overview

Lip filler is a cosmetic treatment that involves injecting dermal fillers into the lips to enhance their size, shape, and overall appearance. This treatment adds volume, making the lips fuller and plumper. Lip fillers can also be used to define the edges of the lips, enhance their contour, and create a more pronounced Cupid’s bow. Additionally, they can correct asymmetry, creating balance between the two sides, and smooth out vertical lines around the mouth for a more youthful look.

Candidates for Lip Filler

Lip filler is ideal for individuals with naturally thin lips or those who have experienced volume loss due to aging, as it can enhance lip fullness, creating a more plump and youthful appearance. It’s also an excellent option for those seeking to define their lip shape, such as by accentuating the Cupid’s bow or refining the overall lip contour. Additionally, lip filler benefits those with uneven or asymmetrical lips, helping to achieve a more balanced and harmonious look. Candidates may also include individuals with fine lines around the lips, commonly known as “smoker’s lines” or “lipstick lines,” who wish to smooth these for a rejuvenated appearance.

FAQ

How do I prepare?
Avoid drinking alcohol and taking any blood-thinning medications and supplements, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, fish oil, and certain herbal supplements, for at least a week before your treatment, unless advised otherwise by your doctor. These can increase the risk of bruising. Schedule any major dental work or facial treatments (like facials, microdermabrasion, or chemical peels) at least two weeks before or after your filler appointment to prevent any complications. If you have an important event coming up, schedule your filler appointment at least 2-4 weeks in advance to allow any swelling or bruising to subside.
What should I expect after my treatment?
It’s common to experience moderate swelling in the treated area right after the procedure. Swelling often peaks within the first 24 to 48 hours after the treatment and then gradually decreases. Gently applying ice packs can help reduce swelling. This is a normal response to the injections and usually subsides within a few hours to a couple of days. Mild bruising can also occur at the injection sites. This varies from person to person but typically resolves within a week. Bruising may be more noticeable in some individuals. The lips may feel tender or sensitive for a few days. This discomfort is usually mild and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief such as acetaminophen if needed. You’ll notice an immediate change in the volume and shape of your lips, but the final results will become more apparent as swelling subsides, usually within one to two weeks. You should avoid strenuous exercise, excessive heat (like saunas or hot yoga), and alcohol for at least 24 to 48 hours after treatment, as these can exacerbate swelling and bruising.
Will the results look natural?
Over the course of the first week, the filler will settle into the lips, and the initial firmness or unevenness should smooth out. Any bruising that occurred will start to fade, and the lips will begin to look more natural. By the end of two weeks, most of the swelling and bruising should have subsided, and you’ll see the final result of your lip enhancement. The lips should look fuller, more defined, and natural. Our goal is to enhance your appearance in a way that subtly highlights your natural beauty, without appearing overdone or fake. We aim to restore lost volume or refine your features in a subtle way, allowing you to look and feel your best while maintaining a natural look.
How long do the results last?
The lips are a highly mobile area of the face, which can contribute to a slightly shorter duration of results compared to other areas where fillers are used. Frequent lip movement (e.g., talking, eating) can cause the filler to break down more quickly. The results of lip filler typically last between 6 to 12 months, depending on the type of filler used and your body’s natural metabolism. People with faster metabolisms may notice the effects of the filler diminishing sooner. Factors such as sun exposure, smoking, and overall skin health can also impact how long the results last. To maintain the desired look, you may need touch-up treatments periodically.
Does lip filler hurt?
Lip filler treatments involve some discomfort, but most patients find the procedure to be quite tolerable. Before the treatment, a topical anesthetic (numbing cream) can be applied to the lips to minimize discomfort. Most fillers also contain a small amount of lidocaine, a local anesthetic, which further helps to reduce pain during the injections. You may feel a slight pinch or sting as the needle enters the skin, but the numbing agents usually make this sensation mild. Some areas of the lips might be more sensitive than others, but overall, the pain is usually minimal. After the procedure, your lips might feel tender or slightly sore. Some patients also experience mild swelling, redness, or bruising, which can contribute to discomfort. These effects typically subside within a few days. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen can help manage any post-treatment discomfort. While there is some discomfort associated with lip filler treatments, the pain is generally mild and temporary. Many patients find the experience manageable, especially with the use of numbing agents.
