Neuromodulators have revolutionized the world of cosmetic treatments, offering a non-surgical solution to reduce wrinkles, fine lines, and other signs of aging. These injectable treatments work by temporarily relaxing the muscles that cause wrinkles, leading to smoother and more youthful-looking skin. While Botox is perhaps the most well-known neuromodulator, there are several other options available, each with its unique properties and benefits. This blog will explore the various types of neuromodulators to help you make an informed decision about which one might be right for you.
- Botox (OnabotulinumtoxinA)
Botox is the original and most widely recognized neuromodulator. Approved by the FDA in 2002 for cosmetic use, Botox has a long track record of safety and effectiveness.
At the full dose recommended by the manufacturer, the effects of Botox typically last 3 to 4 months. - Dysport (AbobotulinumtoxinA)
Dysport is another popular neuromodulator that is often compared to Botox. It was FDA-approved for cosmetic use in 2009 and is particularly known for its fast-acting results.
Dysport and Botox are measured differently. In our practice, we agree that the most appropriate conversion is 3 units of Dysport for every 1 unit of Botox. Although it sounds like you are getting more units with Dysport, the volume injected, the number of injections, and the cost remains the same.
With the 3:1 conversion, many patients notice that Dysport feels a little stronger and the results may take effect slightly faster. - Xeomin (IncobotulinumtoxinA)
Overview
Xeomin, approved by the FDA in 2010, is sometimes referred to as a “naked” form of botulinum toxin because it doesn’t contain any additives or preservatives. This pure formulation may reduce the risk of developing resistance to the treatment and may be a preferable option for patients sensitive to additives.
Many patients have told us that the effect of Xeomin is softer than Botox when similar dosing is used. - Jeuveau (PrabotulinumtoxinA-xvfs)
We have noticed Jeuveau to be the most similar to Botox. - Daxxify (DaxibotulinumtoxinA-lanm)
Daxxify received FDA approval for cosmetic use in 2022, and some studies have demonstrated that its effects can last up to 6 months or even longer. However, double the amount of units is required during treatment, which increases the cost of treatment. These higher doses may also possible cause too much muscle weakness, and thus should be performed with care.
Conclusion
Neuromodulators offer a versatile and effective way to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and manage various medical conditions. While Botox remains the most well-known option, alternatives like Dysport, Xeomin, Jeuveau, and Daxxify provide different formulations and characteristics that may better suit individual needs.
